Water Filter Installation Instructions Model UC Single Under-counter Purifier

This single under-counter filter is mounted under the sink and is connected between the cold-water side of your faucet and the cold water shut-off valve. First, mount the faucet in your sink or countertop; a 1/2” or larger hole is required.  If you don't have an extra hole in your sink and you have a hose sprayer, you can remove the hose sprayer and cap it off at the connection to your main faucet and use that hole. Otherwise, you'll need to drill a 1/2" hole in your sink or countertop. If your sink is all porcelain or your countertop is marble or granite, we recommend you hire a professional to drill the hole.

Installing the Faucet

If your hole is greater than 1/2", position the large gasket over the hole in your sink or counter top, and insert the stem of the faucet through the hole (if your hole is just 1/2" you won't need the plastic washer).  Under your sink, install the large plastic washer and the lock washer through the stem and then secure it with the brass nut.  Next, apply Teflon tape to the bottom of the faucet stem, and install the 7/16" faucet adapter (with the 1/4" quick connect fitting). Then firmly insert one end of the 1/4" diameter tubing into the faucet adapter quick connect fitting until it bottoms. 

Install the Housing

Install the filter with the bracket under your sink using the screws provided.  When positioning the bracket and filter, be sure to leave at least 2” inches of space below the housing so you can easily remove the housing sump (long end) for future filter replacement.  Now, connect the open end of tubing leading from the faucet into the 1/4” quick connect fitting on the output of the filter housing. Insert firmly until the tube bottoms.

Installing the EZ Faucet Adapter

Turn off the water supply to your kitchen faucet.  Then remove the supply line from the cold-water shut-off valve and your faucet, and connect the cold-water side of the faucet to the 1/2" inside thread side of the EZ Faucet Adapter.  If your faucet does not have 1/2" outside threads, you will need a fitting adapter to match the thread size of your faucet stem, available at your local plumbing supply store.  Measure the connector from your faucet, and take that measurement along with the faucet connector to your local plumbing store (Home Depot carries these fittings) and have them match the fitting.  The other side of the faucet connector has 1/2" outside threads for a 1/2" compression fitting, or to a hose with a 1/2” connector on one end and a 3/8" connector on the other. Before installing, use Teflon tape on the threads.  Connect the 3/8” hose fitting to the cold-water shut-off valve.  And finally, connect the second length of tubing to the quick connect fittings on the input of the filter housing and at the Faucet Valve Connector.  Now, open the valve on the faucet connector and then open the cold-water shut-off valve and check for leaks.

To Operate

Open the faucet either by pushing the lever forward or backward (standard faucet) or turning the 1/4 turn valve on the designer faucet counterclockwise.  Run the water for several minutes to remove the carbon fines from the new KDF/GAC cartridge.  The water may contain air bubbles, but that will clear after a short break-in period.

Operating Tips

You should run the water several minutes if you haven't used the filter over night, or after returning from a trip. Water standing in the filter can taste bitter due to excess zinc oxide produced by the KDF.  It's not harmful, and actually protects the cartridge from bacteria growth.  Running the filter before use will remove the taste.

The filter should be run at 1 gallon a minute or less for maximum chlorine removal.  Any faster will reduce the removal percentage.

If you move, or disconnect your filter and store it, always keep water in the cartridge to prevent damage to the KDF media.  To remove the tubing from the quick connect fitting, push down on the outer ring of the fitting and then pull the tubing out.

Testing for Chlorine and Cartridge Replacement

Before replacing the KDF/GAC cartridge, test for chlorine using the enclosed chlorine test strips.  Place some filtered water into a cup and dip the test strip into the water moving it back and forth for 10 seconds.  The color of the water will determine the amount of chlorine present, if any.  If chlorine is present, then you'll need to replace the cartridge.  You must read the test strips immediately, otherwise they can change color and give a false reading.  Additional test strips are available (2 for $1.25) from Software Exchange LLC/The Water Exchange. Our cartridge has been tested to remove chlorine for over 12,000 gallons of water, and it still may be removing the chlorine after 3 years of use, but it is recommended that you replace the filter every three years.

Replacing the KDF/GAC Cartridge

Remove the top of the second housing (the sump) either by hand or with the enclosed wrench (counterclockwise) and discard the old filter.  Insert the cartridge with the black (GAC) end toward the base (wide end of housing) and the gold end into the top (the sump).  Then hand tighten.  Run for several minutes to remove the carbon fines from the new KDF/GAC cartridge, and check for leaks.

Operating Specifications and Warranty Information

Maximum water pressure is 100 PSI and maximum operating temperature is 110 F.

Housing has a 1 year warranty.  The KDF/GAC cartridge has a 3-year warranty, prorated at $1.65 per month of usage.

This warranty does not cover damage due to abuse, neglect, freezing, fire or other fortuitous event. No allowances made for any consequential damages, labor or expense incurred as a result of a proven defect. NO WARRANTY FOR MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

Our filters are not warranted against sediment clogging. If the flow rate is significantly reduced, clogging is most likely. You can try to back-flush the filters by reversing the fittings on the housing to temporarily reverse the water flow.
