New York, NY Water Report Quality Analysis
The water quality report for New York, NY and New York City area is online at:
nyc.gov/html/dep/pdf/wsstate10.pdf
Basically, New York water is good with low amounts of contaminants under the maximum contaminant levels. However, certain contaminants like lead tend to be higher in homes because of old pipes, and can go above the MCL of 15 ppb. In 2010, lead was over the action level at 19 ppb and some coliform bacteria was listed. Our KDF/GAC cartridge will reduce the lead. Also, the old pipes carry sediment and rust, and and that gets into homes. So, for New York City area water we always recommend a ceramic bacteria pre-filter followed by our KDF/GAC cartridge for the lead. KDF also removes HAA5s and TTHMs present in water systems using chlorine as a disinfectant. Fluoride averages 0.83 ppm, which is slightly lower than the national average of 1 ppm. And chlorine averages 0.53 ppm, which much lower then most water systems. KDF will remove 99.9 percent of the chlorine, and you can add a fluoride filter to remove 90 percent of the fluoride.
The minimal system we recommend for the New York City area is our UCD-C, double under counter system with a ceramic pre-filter for bacteria, sediment and cysts and the KDF/GAC cartridge for lead, chlorine and other contaminants--also remove chromium if present. If you want to remove fluoride, you will need a triple filter, Model UCT-C-F. It includes a ceramic cartridge, which is cleanable up to 40 times, the KDF/GAC cartridge and a fluoride reduction cartridge.
