Philadelphia, PA Water Report Quality Analysis

The water quality report for Philadelphia, PA is online at:

phila.gov/water/pdfs/WQR2009.pdf

Generally, the water looks okay, but they've tested lead as high as 6 ppb, maximum contaminant level at 15 ppb.  Our our KDF/GAC cartridge will reduce the lead.  You do have HAA5s and TTHMs, present in all municipal systems, but our KDF/GAC cartridge removes them.  Fluoride is listed at 1.02 ppm, and you can remove that if you want.  They do have chromium listed as high as 7 ppb.  They don't say if it's chromium 6, which was in the news recently.  However, our KDF/GAC cartridge removes both chromium and chromium 6.  See our NSF-53 Water Test at:

http://www.thewaterexchange.net/nsf-53_test.html

Nitrates are listed as high as 4.05 ppm with the MCL at 15.  This can be removed with our nitrate specific cartridges.

Chlorine is added as chloramines (chlorine mixed with ammonia) as high as 2.62 ppm.  KDF only removes some of the chloramines, but we have a special catalytic carbon cartridge that removes about 90 percent.

So, I would recommend a double under-counter filter Model UCD-CH for chlorine, heavy metals and chloramines. The dual filter systems start at $189.95.
See http://www.thewaterexchange.net/under_counter_filters.html.

If you want to remove fluoride you would need a triple filter, UCT-CH-F for $299.95.  If you live in a old home with old pipes, you may need a sediment filter to prevent our cartridges from clogging.  That filter would b our UCT-C-CH for  sediment/bacteria (c is for ceramic), heavy metals, chlorine and chloramines.

We also have countertop versions of the filters.

Radioactive contaminants are not listed, however uranium, radium and alpha and beta particles are common across the US.  You may want to call your water company and find out.  If they are in your water, whole housewater softeners will reduce radioactivity. We also sell sodium/softener cartridges for our filters.
